How a domain transfer works after a sale
Once an order is paid, the domain moves from the seller to the buyer. AIODomain opens a transfer record for every paid order. It shows each step, who must act and the deadline.
Two ways to move a domain#
- Push: the buyer has an account at the same registrar as the seller. The seller moves the domain into the buyer's account. This is usually the fastest way.
- Registrar transfer: the buyer uses another registrar. The seller unlocks the domain and gives the authorisation code. The buyer starts the transfer at their registrar.
If neither fits, the buyer can choose another way and explain it in a note.
The steps#
- Buyer: gives the transfer details: the method, the registrar and the account.
- Seller: pushes the domain, or enters the authorisation code.
- Buyer: for a registrar transfer, starts it at their registrar with the code.
- Seller: marks the order transferred with a note.
- Buyer: confirms receipt. The order completes and the seller is paid.
We also check the public registry. When it shows the domain moved to a new registrar, the transfer is marked verified, and the order may complete by itself.
Read the Domain Transfer Policy for the deadlines.
